Governors

What do governors do?

The Local Governing Body (LGB) is part of the school’s leadership and management. School governors provide strategic leadership and accountability in schools.

The role of the LGB is a strategic one and its key functions are to:

  • set the aims and objectives for the school
  • set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives
  • set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives
  • monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives
  • act as a ‘critical friend’. This means they offer both support and challenge to the school and the headteacher.

The day to day running of the school is delegated to the headteacher and the LGB work with the headteacher to shape the future of the school and to make strategic decisions e.g. how the school budget is used, what the priorities are, what the challenges are and how these can be overcome, managing external changes in education and ensuring that Hilltop continues to develop and offer a good education and good value for money

Each governor has a ‘portfolio’. This covers certain aspects of school and governors will develop a good understanding of the areas in their portfolio so they can report back to the LGB. Governors develop an understanding of how school works and what goes on in school by visiting school at different times in the school day. They may talk to the staff and children and observe lessons and other activities.
