Spring 1

This half term our topic is ‘Bears, Bears, Bears’. Click on the link to our Topic Letter to see what we have been learning.

We began the half term learning about the story ‘Bear Snores On’. We sequenced the story, made our own text maps and thought about how the characters felt at different points in the story.

During the second week we enjoyed learning the story of ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. We retold the story in the garden, with the children splashing through rivers, squelching through mud and tiptoeing through the narrow, gloomy bear cave! The children also used the small world characters to create a bear hunt and they made beautiful bear maps and collages to retell the story. The children had great fun innovating their own version of the Bear Hunt. In one class the children went on a lion hunt through a hot and dry desert, a noisy creepy jungle, Another class made up a money hunt! They navigated through a hot, slippy desert, a noisy freezing factory and a squelchy splashy swamp.

Our learning moved on to learning about bears old and new. We have created lost posters to help find the owner of a lost bear and we will write descriptions all about our own bears.

During the latter half of the term we will learn about facts about real bears! The children used non-fiction texts to find facts and make their own text maps about sun bears, pandas, polar and grizzly bears! These were sent home to retell at home. They made salt dough bears, used pastels to make bear pictures and created their own non-fiction books.
