Autumn

This term our topic is 'A Safe Haven'. Click on our topic letter to see what we have been learning.

The children have been learning about the human body. They recapped their knowledge of the importance of eating healthily and carried out a messy investigation which helped them understand how digestion works in their bodies (see the images on the left hand side). In English, the children became news reporters to investigate a car accident caused by a careless texting teenager and they successfully compiled a newpaper article all about the incident. The learning this term has linked closely with PSHCE and the children have researched and recorded information in leaflets about how to deal with bullying. However, the highlight of the term was a trip to watch 'Gangsta Granny' on stage at The Capitol in Horsham, which led to some excellent drama and playscript writing.

Alongside the topic work, the children have also been learning a musical instrument! Every Wednesday in Year 5, children are taught how to play the recorder by Mrs Hartley from Key 2 Music. They will be performing in a concert to parents before Christmas. As well as this, there has been a large push on teamwork within the year group. In PE lessons, the children have been playing lots of team building games and they even applied what they had learnt to come up with their very own game for other children to play. In art, children worked together to create 'face sculptures' based on the work of Italian artist Arcimboldo. They finished the term with a textile project where they sewed their own textile square with a fruit and veg twist!
